Six finalists in the running for ‘England’s most Innovative Steak’ title

The finish line is now in sight for the finalists, with three awards up for grabs. A winner will be declared in the ‘Innovative Butchery’ and ‘Added Value’ categories and one of those will then be crowned the competition’s ‘Overall Winner’.

‘Innovative Butchery’ Finalists:

  • Althams Butchers in Morecambe, Lancashire with ‘Lamb Neck Fillet Steak’
  • Aubrey Allen of Leamington Spa, Warwickshire with ‘1 Bone Sirloin Noisette’
  • Wm Morrison Supermarkets with ‘British Beef Denver Steak’

‘Added Value’ Finalists:

  • Aubrey Allen of Leamington Spa, Warwickshire with ‘Sirloin Pave with Café de Paris’
  • Owen Taylor & Sons of Alfreton, Derbyshire with ‘Denver Fire Steak’
  • Penshaw Farm Butchers in Tyne & Wear with ‘Spicy Sirloin Sizzler’

EBLEX foodservice project manager, Hugh Judd, said: "We were delighted with the innovation and quality of the steak entries we received in this competition. The range of products entered showed that there is plenty of appetite for steak product development out there.

"We introduced the Innovative Steak competition this year as we were particularly interested to see cuts taken from the forequarter and other underutilised parts of the carcase, as well as more traditional cuts being presented in unique ways - both of which have the potential to enhance value for the sector and generate enthusiasm among steak lovers.

"From the many entries we received, 10 outstanding steaks received a prestigious ‘Gold Award’, which can be used in promotional and marketing material and on-pack. Now the six finalists will battle it out for the chance to win the title of ‘England’s Best Innovative Steak!’”

The final will take place at the inaugural EBLEX Quality Standard Mark Excellence Awards on 22 April 2015 at the Underglobe, London. The 2015 awards is formed of three competitions: ‘England’s Best Innovative Steak, ‘England’s Best Sirloin Steak’ and ‘England’s Best Steak Pie’.

All three competitions were developed to recognise and reward steak products that deliver excellent eating qualities and the highest levels of customer satisfaction both in and out of the home.
